AN EDGE URL SHORTENER

Short links that resolve next door to every reader

warplo answers every short link from the Cloudflare data center closest to whoever clicked it. No round trip to a far-away server, no database on the way. Every new link is checked for phishing and malware before it goes live.

THE SHORT VERSION

Why edge links?

A one-minute version of what happens between a click and the page.

  1. 01

Most shorteners live in one place

A typical short link is answered by a server in one region. A reader on the other side of the world waits for the request to cross an ocean and come back before the real page even starts loading.

  2. 02

    warplo lives everywhere

Each link is copied to Cloudflare's global key-value store. The click is answered by the nearest data center with a 302 redirect, reading one cached value and nothing else.

  3. 03

    And it stays clean

Only signed-in people can create links. Each new destination is checked against Google's lists of phishing and malware sites first, and creation is rate limited, so warplo links don't turn into a phishing tool.

Every click should take the shortest way to the page.

From a long URL to a short trip

Three stops. The slow, careful work happens once, when the link is made. The click itself does almost nothing.

01 · CREATE

Paste a long link

Pick a custom slug or take a random six-character one. Set an expiry if the link should stop working on its own.

02 · SCREEN

Checked before it's saved

You have to be signed in, stay under the rate limit, and the destination has to pass Google Web Risk, the same phishing and malware lists Chrome uses. If any check fails, nothing is saved.

03 · RESOLVE

Answered at the edge

The nearest data center reads the link from its cache and sends the reader on. The click is counted after the response has already left.

SAFETY

What never gets a link

Short links are a favourite disguise for phishing. warplo refuses these before anything is stored.

Script and data URLs. Only http and https are allowed

URLs with credentials baked in
warplo.link
Links that point back at warplo, to stop redirect loops

Anything Google lists as malware or phishing

UNDER THE HOOD

One read, one redirect

Run it yourself. The response comes from the data center named in cf-ray, usually the one in your city.

  1. 01
Nearest data center picks it up

Cloudflare routes the reader to the closest of its locations automatically.

  2. 02
    One cached key-value read

The slug is looked up in Workers KV, kept warm in that location for an hour.

  3. 03
    302 to the real page

The browser is sent on straight away. Unknown or expired slugs get a 404.

  4. 04
    The click is counted afterwards

Country and referring site are logged once the reader is already gone, so counting never slows them down.
